AKHNOOR: The war heroes of Chhamb Battle of 1971 were remembered and paid
obeisance in a simple yet befitting manner on 05 Dec at Chhamb War Memorial,
Akhnoor under the agies of Cross Sword Division. The memorial service was conducted to
commemorate the sacrifices made by brave soldiers of 5th Battalion, The SIKH
Regiment during 1971 Indo-Pak War.
A company of 5 SIKH, during the war, was entrusted with the vital
role of defending important approaches to Chhamb Sector under the leadership of
Maj DS Pannu.
The company successfully
repulsed as many as fourteen attacks launched by Pakistan Army over four
continuous days thereby successfully thwarting the designs of the Pakistan Army
in the sector. The brave soldiers of 5
SIKH Regiment stood fast till the end, despite all odds in the finest
traditions of the Indian Army and sacrificed their lives in the call of duty.
Wreaths were laid by Maj Gen NPS Hira, SM, GOC Crossed Swords
Division and Col NJS Pannu (Retd),
brother of late Maj DS Pannu, Vrc (posthumous) and other serving and retired
soldiers on recognition of the sacrifices made.
A number of civilian administration officials and locals also attended
the ceremony and paid their respects to the brave sons of the nation.
